Why does Women's Hair Loss Happen?

By Celia Pina

Everybody knows that men are not thrilled about going bald. But women's hair loss is equally traumatizing and even devastating. Actually, women's hair loss is a large issue worldwide. Hair loss in women is a tremendous source of embarrassment, and that's especially true in Western countries. There are social expectations about women and hair, and just one of them is that women don't, and shouldn't, lose their hair. So for a woman to lose her hair is almost like losing her femininity and any semblance of beauty. Also, did you know that hair loss happens as much in women as it does in men? Continue reading to find out the reasons for certain kinds of female hair loss.

The most obvious reason that a woman might lose her hair is to cancer therapy treatments. The primary treatment that causes this is chemotherapy. Hair loss is traumatic to begin with, and women undergoing cancer treatment can readily find supportive and helpful information in this area. Fortunately, there are some charity organizations that supply wigs made from real hair to cancer patients to wear until their real hair returns.

Believe it or not, pregnancy can have quite a large effect on a woman's hair. While some women enjoy increased hair growth, others deal with the opposite. After childbirth, the hair will begin to shed pretty fast for the women who experienced more hair growth.

Naturally, if a mother doesn't know about this it can be a little bit startling. However once the body chemistry and hormones return to normal then things will settle down with the hair. The important thing is to avoid over-reacting to it.

One of the most often cited reasons for hair loss is menopause. Hair loss is a part of menopause, but there are many other changes that happen, as well. It's quite common for an increase in the amount of hair loss in post-menopause than any other time. The culprit in this scenario is the dramatic drop in estrogen, and then that causes a host of other changes. However in this situation, hormone therapy cannot restore her hair as is possible with other situations. The best approach is to simply speak with your doctor about any other possible options. There are lots of reasons that a woman might lose her hair. There are environmental, emotional, and physical scenarios and reasons. The only way to tell for sure why your hair is getting thin is to talk with your doctor. Whatever the cause, they will help you to find out for sure what it is. Don't think you do not have options because that is simply not true.
