The Best Foods To Fight Hair Loss And The Secret Of Genuine Nutritive Ways To Protect Hair

By Eugene Yeng

The best foods to fight hair loss are the ones we ignore despite knowing they should be the foundation of a healthy diet. Genetics play an unfortunate role in our hair-type, color, and thickness, as well as determining when graying or balding starts and how quickly they progress. Naturally, when we become concerned about the loss of our 'crowning glory' it might already be irreversible. Though it is not scientifically proven, indications draw a definite correlation between foods and hair loss.

The dietary causes of baldness appear to be different in men and women. In men, this loss links to high testosterone hormone levels. These increase with a high intake of meat and fat so the best diet for men is low-fat. In women, the cause seems linked to a sluggish gastrointestinal tract, so increasing active acidophilus cultures (found in good yogurt) is best for women. The best foods to fight hair loss are fresh vegetables, fruits, whole-grain cereals and legumes; these also improve digestion.

Green vegetables are among the top sources of vitamins A and C. The scalp produces a natural, oily hair conditioner, called sebum, using these vitamins. Particularly rich sources are dark-green vegetables; Swiss chard, broccoli, spinach, and kale. These are also good for iron and calcium. Spinach is a food that is generally better when cooked, though occasionally you can use it raw, in a salad.

Pulses and legumes are packed with protein, iron, biotin and zinc. Biotin deficiencies can cause brittle hair. Zinc is a basic building-block of protein-based hair-structure. 'At least three cups a week of this group' is a theme in most successful diets. Combining wholegrain rice with this food group makes the protein more accessible during digestion.

Chickpeas are one of nature's best sources of zinc and vitamin B-6 and they have highly accessible protein. Zinc, taken in combination with vitamin A, helps prevent dandruff. Roast beef contains a similar balance of nutrients.

Almonds are also high in protein; they are a good source of iron and Vitamin E. Almonds apparently reduce cholesterol.

Whole wheat is high in fiber, iron and silica. Without silica, the body cannot absorb many minerals and vitamins.

Crushed oats is not only a great source of fiber. It is one of the best for potassium, iron, and magnesium.

Fatty fish is rich in protein, iron and the omega-3 fatty-acids so critical to scalp health. Salmon is the best fish because of its high vitamin B-12 content. Flax-seed is a vegetarian alternative - the necessary omega-3 fats are best gained by consuming a tablespoon or two daily, if it is freshly-ground.

The 'super-foods' are best for all round nutrition. Fresh vegetables, broccoli sprouts, berries of all types, ginger, garlic, Spirulina, chlorella, and the entire range of herbs and spices make up this 'food group'.

Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron and develop collagen. Vitamin D is essential to brain function so get some sun on your body - without toxic sun-lotion - for ten minutes when it is low in the sky.

Remember that even if you fight your hair loss with the best foods, you will be far better off buying local, fresh and organic. The detrimental effects of insecticides on the human body are truly horrific - ask any agricultural worker - not to mention that organic farming keeps the environment from loss of health too.
