Learn How The Biology And Science Of The Growing Hair May Prevent Baldness

Learning about the biology and science of the growing hair can shed light on the problem of balding. It is important to understand that hair cells are constantly reproducing. The follicle, or dermal papillae, is the biological site of growth. Dermal means skin or cuticle and papillae means processes or outgrowth.

When the growth sites are damaged or destroyed, for example by second degree burns, the construction of the dermal papillae will change. The change does not mean that there will never again be growth at the site. On the contrary, our bodies have the ability to regenerate and repair cells. The damaged dermal papillae will become active when it returns to normalcy.

New growth will look different than the hairs it replaces. The regrowth may also be thinner, fuzzy, and sparse. People who go through chemotherapy experience this phenomenon. Even though there is no trauma to the scalp, patients experience hair loss because the treatment kills all cells. Many people will have regrowth that is not the same texture, thickness, and even color as what they had before the treatment. When people have hair transplants they can also have irregular regrowth.

New growth does not erupt from the skin one strand at a time. Rather, it comes up from the scalp in a grouping of more than three strands. The speed at which it grows is estimated to be about a half inch each month. For a healthier scalp the growth time may be less, while others may have slower growth time.

Our hairs will naturally fall out about every five months and will be replaced with new stronger healthier strands. These new strands push out the old ones replacing them under normal conditions. Unfortunately, this does not happen with male pattern baldness, the strands that are lost are not replaced. Scientists are currently looking for ways to promote new growth.

At present, the two main ways to treat baldness is to cover it up, restore it by transplant, or use medications. There are some changes coming since science has proven that certain minerals and vitamins are needed for the follicles to be healthy to promote growth. The correct mixture of vitamins, minerals, and supplements the contain sulfur, are necessary to promote healthy hair growth. It should be kept in mind that these treatments have their limitations and no one treatment works well for everyone.

Treatment options are likely to improve with universities and private laboratories searching for a valid remedy for the problem. The two approaches that are likely to succeed are cloning and gene therapy. Key genes in the follicles have already been identified that cause dysfunctional growth when they mutate. There are a number of diseases that cause baldness that involve some sort of genetic phenomenon. Biologists are focused on correcting the genetic errors that cause the problem. Cloning is the process of growing new follicles from stem cells. These cells are collected from a donor and supported in a lab until they multiply.

Considering the improvements made in the biology and science of growing hair, it is reasonable to expect to see these approaches successfully used to treat hair loss. At one time people considered the condition part of life that had to be accepted, today there is hope for a cure.
