Hair Loss Treatment Alternatives That Make A Difference

By Shelly Maxim

Hair loss treatment comes in several forms. Most will match their course of action with the severity of loss. Though, the acceptance of a balding head is more common, for those who wish for more strands, they have alternatives. For many people, a thinning scalp is associated with the commonly known male pattern baldness. The more scientific term is androgenetic alopecia. With years of research, man and women have more alternatives to balding than ever.

The most common thought process behind a balding pate is aging. The assumption of an older man going bald holds some weight. Locks grow in thinner as we age. This goes for the female species, too. However, a quarter of young men, not yet 21 years of age, experience male pattern baldness. DHT or dihydrotestosterone makes follicles smaller and smaller. This affects whether hair can push through. In an effort to prevent balding, medications that block this hormone help regain growth. Surgical options are popular, as well.

One of the most common medications is minoxidil, sold under the brand name, Rogaine. This, applied topically each day, blocks the androgen responsible for mane loss. However, for areas that are completely smooth, users may see little result. Early treatment is the key with minoxidil. Once a user stops, any achieved growth goes away.

Propecia, a DHT blocker for which is the brand name for finasteride, comes with FDA approval. Like minoxidil, it stops the shrinkage of follicles that occurs with dihydrotestosterone. It then promotes thicker strand growth.

An additional manner in which to deal with baldness is hair transplant. With transplants, physicians, retrieve follicles from the area of the head where remains. Commonly, it comes from the back area. That part of the head has stubborn strands, so they usually resist falling out. Those follicles become implanted into the balding part of the scalp. Recovery is quick. Swelling and redness lasts just about seven days.

This treatment works for persons where it is too late to see significant improvement with medication. After transplantation, locks grown in sparsely at first, coming in thicker over time. This is a permanent treatment. Patients are not concerned with having to remember to take a pill or apply a topical medication each day.

Even with the significance of hair loss treatment alternatives, there may be other forces at work. Some people are not losing their locks because of androgen, but due to poor diet or sickness. It is best to rule out any problems before effecting action for strand loss.
