Known Reasons and Causes For Women's Hair Loss

By Elena Lopes

Women's hair loss happens for different reasons, and it's more prevalent than most people know. The truth about female hair loss is that it happens close to as much as it does for men, even though men's hair loss gets more attention about it. Why so much more attention given to hair loss in men?

You won't see many commercials on TV about female baldness. What we do know is that there are any number of reasons that a woman might find herself getting a little thin up top. If you're looking for some information about thinning hair in women, then keep reading because that's what we're about to discuss.

For men, the genetic condition of hair loss is referred to as male pattern baldness. Female pattern hair loss is the equivalent condition that occurs in women. It's similar to androgenic alopecia, but it's different for women. For women, the main difference is pattern of hair loss. What usually happens in men is that the hair loss occurs in certain locations, and then it spreads out from there. Women begin to thin at the crown, and all over the top, and it gets thinner.

The pattern seems to be that there isn't really a discernable pattern. There's another condition that can produce hair loss and that is anemia. Lots of women face at least mild anemia because of their biological cycles. This is why women's vitamins will often contain enough iron to help them exceed their daily recommended intake of the iron. Iron deficiency is usually something that can be counteracted with diet and exercise and lifestyle choices. Before you try to correct your iron deficiency on your own, you should talk to your doctor. A blood test is the only way that anemia can be positively diagnosed. Some people have it so severely that they need to treat it with medication. The recommended course of action is to seek professional medical help.

Ok, so women's hair loss so far does not get an equal amount of media attention as is given for men. Obviously, women have hair loss and hair problems for a lot of reasons, and not all are completely understood.

It's obvious that women's hair loss does not garner the equivalent amount of public attention than men's hair loss. We have no idea as to why this happens. However it is probably true that women are much more embarrassed about this and may not seek help with it. We can only hope that this will change in time. Research, time, and public awareness will hopefully shed more light on this area.
